22 jun Child Nutrition Program in Darjeeling
A small scale project to generate milk for plantation workers’ children and for income generation.
In the tea estate of Moondakotee in Darjeeling, North India, there is ample experience in child nutrition projects.
In 2007 and 2009 Tierra Nova has contributed to a cow project. Workers can buy a cow with a loan that is subsequently paid back in two years. The cow produces milk for home consumption and for sale.
The cow also produces dung that is sold to the plantation. In short, the cow is a ‘Cash Cow’ …. (a familiar term for marketing theory).
At Moondakotee Tea Estate, stables were constructed and with the financial support of Tierra Nova cows were bought in 2007. These cows produce 10 to 12 litres of milk, that is distributed daily to the crèches for the youngest children at the tea plantation.
